5 Africa Safari Photography Tips - Travel

For many keen photographers, an Africa safari holiday is one of those top places - as it is a pretty amazing continent for all types of photography. In addition to the amazing Big 5, Big cats and incredible variety of other wildlife, there are breath-taking landscapes, stunning sunsets, insightful portraits, detailed plant life and more.

One of the best places to see all of these elements in on a safari in Kenya. One of the most well-known destinations for an Africa safari, Kenya is a top choice for keen photographers. With its main game reserve, the Masai Mara on the route of the annual wildebeest migration (herds of grazers such as wildebeest and zebra pass through and with this, bring an increase of predators meaning a high chance of stunning shots of lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena), and also home to the Maasai people whose colourful traditional dress can make for some extraordinary portrait shots, a safari in Kenya is a photographers dream holiday.

If you are lucky enough to be heading on a safari in Kenya, here are some simple tips for photographers of any level of experience and using any digital camera.

1. An extra fully charged battery and memory card - make sure these are in a safe part of your camera bag. Often game drives last several hours and you will take hundreds of photos, so don't risk disappointment of running our of battery or having to delete photos that you can't see properly - always carry a spare battery and memory card or two.

2. A mini tripod or camera beanbag - holding the camera still is essential in lots of photography and if you don't have the space or camera for a large beanbag, the mini grip like ones or small camera beanbag can be just as good.

3. Learn to use the sports or rapid shooting mode - as animals can move fast, this mode allows you to take several shots in rapid succession, and is often just a simple switch. But because it isn't one you would use every day, make sure you know the settings before heading on a game drive - you want to be prepared to catch the action as it happens.

4. Natural people shots - For portrait or people photography if you are lucky enough to visit a Maasai village on your safari in Kenya, try to capture the shot naturally, perhaps it is during a nature walk or warrior dance, capture the action, rather than a static posed shot.

5. Don't forget your camera - the likelihood is that you will remember your camera during game drives and other visits, but during your Africa safari, remember your camera at all times. You might be enjoying an afternoon back at camp when a kudu strolls by you, or afternoon sundowners when there is another stunning sunset you want to catch. If your camera bag is handy, you won't miss these special moments.
