The great thing about Thailand is that the cost of living is really low - and so is calling costs for mobile phones and home phones. As long as you use your phone wisely of course and not make international calls all day and night!
There's no doubting the convenient of a mobile phone. And even more so when you're on a Thailand vacation - there will be times when you won't have Internet access, so that means no MSN or Skype. Plus there's those moments when a Thai mobile phone is outright convenient, like when you meet someone you'd love to meet again!
So how do you save costs with your mobile phone then? Well, you can send (local and overseas) SMS messages for pennies on the dollar in Thailand. You can purchase a SIM card and Thai number for a few dollars too. Buy a scratch card with say, $3 on it and it'll give you 7-10 days of talk time. Then top up when you need.
The trick to using your mobile phone for low cost is look for a specific 'mobile phone plan' that'll allow certain times you can use your phone for cheap calls. Say, for example, from 6 PM to 6 AM. Or, find a good daytime plan that lets you make a lot of calls for low cost. Alternatively, use SMS or text messages for your primary communication.
A lot of course depends on how big a mobile phone user you are, and perhaps where you're going too. Most of us just want a backup 'security' tool - and your mobile phone can do this job really well. No need to turn it on all the time. Just carry it with your gear in case you need it, and have your number ready for the new friends you meet!
