Forget me not: beach essentials when staying at cheap hotels in Greece - Travel - Destinations

British summertime, the holiday season, there's nothing quite like it. Going away for the summer is a tradition for many people, not least because there are great last-minute deals to be found for some stunning locations. Staying at cheap hotels in Greece, for instance, is a British favourite, with the choice of many sun-drenched places to choose from. Corfu, Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete - you name it, there's something for everyone.

Booking a holiday at the eleventh-hour, however, may also cause a lot of rushing about. Tickets: check. Reservations: check. Passport: check. No matter how many times you go over it, there's always the feeling that you've left something behind. Perhaps you'll remember at the airport, where you'll kick yourself for having to pay double the price. Or, even worse, you'll find out what you've forgotten at the exact moment you need it. Don't be caught out - here are a few beach essentials for everyone who loves hitting the shoreline.

First and foremost is suntan lotion. Leaving it behind, or forgetting to put any on, could prove disastrous for your skin. There's nothing worse than getting sunburnt on the first day, then spending the rest of your holiday in pain and looking like a lobster. Choose a lotion that suits your skin and apply amply. Be sure to research the strength of the sun in the area you are visiting, and take breaks between sunbathing to stay safe from burning, or worse, damaging your skin. It may sound silly, but it's also essential: take two towels, one to lie on and one to dry off with. Coming out of the ocean only to pad down with a sandy towel can be quite annoying. On that note, it may be worth investing in a beach blanket or mat too.

Sunglasses are a must-have on the beach. They will not only protect your eyes from the sun, but buying the right pair will set some beach-style too. Speaking of practical aesthetics, sun hats are another great way to stay safe and stylish. A hat with a big rim, so to cover your head and face, is recommended. Remember, you're there to enjoy the sun, not fall victim to its rays - so keep protected from headaches and burning. A big bottle of water for each person will also help maintain hydration levels.

With the practicalities out the way, it's on to the fun. If you're not into beach sports to keep you busy, then paperback books are perfect. There's no better way to while away a sunny afternoon than with a good novel. Just be sure to pick something good! If reading's not your thing, then perhaps music is. In which case, you won't want to forget your walkman or MP3 player, packed full of your favourite, upbeat summer songs.

These are just some of the beach essentials to remember, and not only when staying at cheap hotels in Greece, but other places in the region, such as Malta hotels, and Tunisia hotels too. It's important for vacationers to stay informed and protected - make sure your list of essentials is properly checked off. But most importantly, have fun.
